Defeat...!
And so it was his birthday, and I waited longingly at the park on a stone bench which painlessly let us rest underneath the banyan tree for all these years! Two sparrows walked almost seeming hand-in-hand, one appearing half younger than the other. Their steps small and distances long, sometimes flying as high as the winds wished and walk as far as the roads lay. Some food transferred from ground to the older bird’s mouth to the younger one. May be they spoke something to one another which only they understood and no Business school on earth ever taught…!
I glanced more on them than on the wide green grassy land with afternoon showers’ decoration. Moon was let in even before the Sun sunk in but he had not yet arrived. I wasn’t worried if he would come or not, nor was I doubtful on my abilities to convince him of what I had decided, but the sparrows seemed to disturb me more as I was loosing the composure that I had come in with. Far, as far as my recently blurred vision traveled he stood…
Walking slowly like someone disinterested, tired and weak he was approaching. A heavy bag on the sagging shoulders seemed like so much of a burden and I was getting more trembled than happy. He stood in front of me, I smiled, he turned away, I posed a hug and he sat down…
Wish you happy birthday, I had told him every time this day of his life arrived. Today I had not yet said and just turned to look at how he was feeling. With muddy white shirt and crumbled hair he looked 5pounds weaker in a week! I observed carefully his dry lips remembering those first of the words that he had spoke – ma, ma… he didn’t seem to notice me but was engaged looking around, anticipating someone.
Wish you happy birthday!
Did you come alone?
Yes, I’ve split with your mother… you don’t even need her! I’ve been with you and taken care of you for all these 7 years…
And I’ve been with her and she’s taken care of me for 7yrs 9months…
This time I was defeated, whoever told him all this! May be she did or may be it was him, but I’m defeated and I sit there alone as I see him walk past my blurred vision…
Smallest of the words sometimes transforms into biggest of the defeats…
