Guzaarish Music Review

So, there comes one of the most awaited movies of this year by the ace director Sanjay Leela Bhansali – SLB. This time he extends his new avatar as a music director to the whole album of Guzaarish! Does he fare well or not? Here it is…
The title track by KK gets a good rendition in his typical style but the song’s mood is set to be quite dull and sad. The new lyricist doesn’t really take advantage of the opportunity and goes on to write lines that almost end like rhymes with Guzaarish, baarish, khwaaish and farmaayish! The issh song in Devdaas still sounds fresh against this one! SLB starts off with just an average number.
'Sau Gram Zindagi' is a far better composition and has been intelligently penned and much melodiously sung by Kunal Ganjawala. It might be interesting to watch the video on this. SLB recreates the Saawariya effect with Kunal once again and towards the end the song gets more energetic with English lines and ends as a descent hummable track!
'Tera Zikr hai' by Shail Hada who gave the beautiful title track of Saawariya rests completely on the nuances of a singer which is again let down by average lyrics. SLB writes more notes for his singer than his musicians and that’s his trademark for this album. There’s nothing great to talk about this track except for the final aalap that's noteworthy!
'Saiba' starts with a haunting melody with lines like ‘tuzo mog maka diga’ followed by melodious Vibhavari Joshi’s rendition. SLB again writes clear notes for her and she amazes with a fresh voice. One more hummable tune that you might remember even at the end of the album!
KK comes back with his 2nd track which sounds further saddened and if you’re missing someone you might just get connected to this song, else you’ll easily sleep through it! SLB is the one who got KK sing the everlasting ‘Tadap Tadap’ and KK seems to have shown his gratitude with this number ‘Jaane kiske khwaab’ - just another sad n slow number in the album.
Now the best song of the album begins in Sunidhi Chauhan’s voice. SLB excels with ‘Udi’ and Sunidhi shows how good a singer she is and might just run away with lots of nominations (I wish awards!) for this track that she won’t easily forget in years! The 'maka diga' lines reappear this time with feet thumping beats and elevated Sunidhi. A great job indeed!
The downfall of the album just starts with Shail Hada’s ‘Keh Na Saku’. SLB doesn’t care to make this sad song interesting at all. It’s sad, slow and sleepy. I can only pity the singer and can’t even imagine how one can sit through this in the movie! And, no exaggeration that!
‘Chand ki katori’ that starts like a lori succeeds. It’s indeed hard to be awake through this song for its lyrics, the crying voice of Harshdeep Kaur and such average notes of SLB! Lines with katori, chatori and batori in 2010? May be SLB was kidding!
KK got one more song - 'Daayein Baayein'! This one got some life into it and you might just try to recover from depression that the album had caused so far. But before you do, the song is over and gives way to another debacle in the form of Shankar Mahadevan’s voice! I never disliked a song of his this much before that I can’t believe my ears listening to ‘Dhundhli Dhundhli’. Since he’s my favorite singer I can’t take any courage to criticize this one. But Mr. SLB just doesn’t seem to smile at all when he’s with his instruments.
I wish SLB knew more on the genre of music that Guzaarish needed or had gone back to Ismail Darbar or even Monty Sharma for these songs. For me, SLB’s only composition for Saawariya which was ‘Thode Badmaash’ had more life and freshness compared to the songs in this album. Some of the strengths are SLB doesn’t rely on a single remix or heavy beats or item numbers here and tries to come out in a style that’s his unique and original (though its hard to ignore references to Saawariya)! And this album has more for its singers than its listeners. Though the songs are melodious, there's not much variety and you can’t have 10 sad songs packed in 1 album! I can only feel sad for the songs because individually they are good but together they are dull…
My Guzaarish is Mr. SLB please refrain from using all these songs in the movie, else you know what happened with your Saawariya!?
P.S.: Whatever happened to the SLB we knew of HDDCS, who had so much life n colors n music!
