Little Wonders...!

When it comes to music in Bollywood, there are a few names that easily find place in one's heart with the likes of the great Madan Mohan, AR Rahman, RD/SD Burman, Laximkant Pyarelal, Kalyanji Anandji, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy to name a few. But there were/are many others who didn't exist for long, yet made an impact in big ways! I'm not talking about those Anu Maliks or Reshamiyas of the world. But the following who created unforgettable melodies and became almost the forgotten musicians today.

Ismail Darbar: With an enviable debut like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and an award winning Devdas he never recreated himself with either Tera Jadoo Chalgaya or Kisna and quickly disappeared!

Jeet: Do we know he made a melodious debut with the current sensation Pritam!? It was Tere Liye and I remember humming those soft tunes sung by Sonu Nigam. Later they teamed up in Mere Yaar Ki Shadi Hai which was a disastrous movie but songs being fresh! The duo parted ways and Jeet isn't remembered unlike Pritam.

Monty Sharma: If you liked the lavish Devdas and it's intense cinematic experience, Monty Sharma was the one scoring its background. Black had no songs, yet an incredible music throughout its background that Monty provided. Saawariya too for many music lovers had wonderful and soothing music. But alas, Monty Sharma seems to be done with his best efforts!

Raam Laxman: Who can ever forget Maine Pyaar Kiya or Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and the endless songs they had composed by RaamLaxman! Though his 3rd with the Bharjatyas which was Hum Saath Saath Hain was an average grosser, he isn't remembered for anything else.

Sandeep Chowta: Who had a Mast entry to bollywood with Mast, followed by Jungle and Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya (interestingly all with Ram Gopal Verma) and unendingly memorable background scores for Satya, Kaun, Company and Om Shanti Om to name a few. The one who revolutionized background music bagging many awards now seems to be still in the business but almost invisible.

Those were just a few names who couldn't go beyond a couple of unforgettable and incredible efforts! What crosses my mind is, 'Is there a limitation to one's achievement that one gives his best that he cannot repeat!' It's a big question that can be debated but since these people were once my favorites, I couldn't ignore their effort and the question still remains...

A Journey to PMP...

Like many, I thought of it years ago before actually getting on to it. Yes, it needed some mandatory requirements to be fulfilled as highlighted in the PMI's website and people in this part of the world consider professional certifications as one of the most important touchstones. So it took all the more important and serious thought when I looked for progression in my career!

A minimum of 4500 project hours to be justified was the most important of all and thanks to my exposure while in Singapore, it wasn't hard to be fulfilled. And IMAGE International, the school where I took my mandatory classes (to fulfill 7X5=35hours) helped in a lot of ways to get started. The classes were helpful and what mattered most was the interaction among the participants. Starting from December 2010 until January 2011 the classes were interesting and I felt glad to be back to school after many years.

So when I decided, my target was March 2011 to become a PMP. And after the classes, I had about 2 months but yes, unless you fix a target date you won't do it. Hence our schools have exam dates, projects have deadlines but life has no end date and decisions we make ourselves don't get executed because there's no external compulsion involved! To begin with, I just booked the slot during the Chinese new year holidays (was on Feb 2nd or 3rd)  for March 14th and told myself that the date can always be postponed if I feel I'm not yet prepared.

Thanks to my dear friend nidhi who corrected me, not to postpone but stick to it. Yes, how often do you have the privilege to get project deadlines postponed? Almost never. And a successful project is the one that completes on time and on budget. So, completing the exam was a project in itself and I stuck to my date!

Head First's book for PMP is by far the best book I've come across. It was like reading a novel or watching a movie for me. But the PMBOK cannot be neglected since the exam is completely based on it. As many say, its true that PMBOK is quite dry and made me sleepy when I read it first. But as days progressed it was more relatable and got better to read. Out of the 2 months of self study time, I must say for atleast 2 weeks I didn't study AT ALL. Thanks to the end of classes, that made me feel I've achieved something and needed a break (which wasn't quite justified), then the Chinese new year holidays for almost a week when I was away from my books holidaying and also those on-going world cup cricket matches during critical weekends near the exam! But in the end, its those 6 weeks of neat dedication, cautious planning that paved the way!

There were a few podcasts like PMPrep and pm411.org (just the free episodes though) that I listened to while traveling to my work. Head First's sample questions and exercises, PMBOK that I did read 2-3 times (I can't believe I actually did that) Many have noted that PMBOK has to be read atleast twice which is very true. And a few mock exams I took set me up for the day. 1st exam I took with just 2 weeks to go got me 79% that made me happy. But the 2nd exam with just 2 days to the D-day got only about 52% and I was down with confidence. I did not want to go to the actual exam with such low self-believe and I made up my mind that I'll take another mock exam a day before the actual exam and score some decent marks to feel happy and hopefully stick to the date. Yes, it got me about 77% and that's it! I looked forward to the 14th of March.

My academic formula was to not read anything on the day of the exam, a real good sleep the previous night and listen to cheerful music as if there was no exam or result! That according to me is needed to shadow any kind of nervousness or fear and do well with a good presence of mind in those critical hours!

So for the D-day, its best to be ready with some brain dumps to dump in those 15 minutes that one gets in the exam hall (during the introductory slides) I had thought of dumping all the formulas I had memorized but again thanks to nidhi who had said write whatever else you can in those 15 minutes. And I wrote all the 42 processes, along with their process groups and knowledge areas (a complete chart) which the whole exam revolves around. It helped in a BIG WAY as the exam progressed.

The 4hr exam wasn't easy, nor extremely difficult but definitely challenging and very interesting in the way the questions were framed. The PMI ethics would stop me from discussing the actual questions, but as planned I was about 100/200 questions in the first 1.5 hours when I took a break and went out, drank some water and relaxed a bit. The next 100 questions took about 1 hour and in 2.5 hours I was actually done! But I had made a resolution that I would sit for all the 4hours because that was my biggest challenge since I had never had this habit of sitting throughout an exam (be in school, college or any other certification) So I spent next 1hr in carefully looking at the questions I had marked for review. I had marked almost nearly half of them for review!! A second look at the same question probably got me answer it rightly. And with almost 10-15 minutes left, I submitted my exam for evaluation after which a survey about the exam popped up at the end of which there was a congratulatory message for passing the exam. There was no percentage of marks obtained or any such detail but just a PASS.

So, what's next after PMP? I ask myself! There's another project that will begin, but the journey to PMP will remain green. A great learning and lot of planning that I'll take forward wherever I go!

Thanks IMAGE, my fellow students and instructor, PMI (the website and its blogs), Head First, Podcasts, mock exams. And, last but not the least my dear friend nidhi and my better half - two people who get more credit for this than myself!

Touch Me!

It was a click-world sometime back and for a few years when one part of the world got connected to its other extreme with a few clicks n keys! Through internet, through webcams and social networking sites, friends that would’ve probably departed forever assuming they might never meet in their lives got connected, relatives who fought over petty things came in to terms and ex-mates who bet would never see each other secretly peeked into one another’s kids’ b’day albums!

What’s happening where, who’s thinking what, who you should hire and who not can be found in no time! Facebook has even accounted for 1 in 5 divorces in the US recently! As easy it gets to know n get hooked onto someone, as easy it is to get away from them (and probably still stay connected – an irony!)

And the latest buzz is here – you don’t need to spend so much energy clicking anymore! Just touch! Yes, touch n feel! So keep in touch has become a literal phrase and you touch your friends, zoom them in, and move them around in their albums! Many such simulating applications are being written that are growing overnight, competing with each other and who wins? Customer…?

Well, not really coz someone who’s just bought a revolutionary gadget finds it outdated in less than an year or a few months when the touch gets quicker, clearer and better! So who’s benefited? The one who’ s making it and selling it to the world, making the world buy them and believe it’s the best thing that has happened to the mankind just before taking a U-turn later to declare his own gadget has been replaced by a new and more efficient one by his own company! Uff!

So the one who touched, also burnt his finger to make a resolution that he wouldn’t touch it anymore and will find a better one or never yield to buy something worth his half a month’s salary to feel embarrassed when his friend takes him to the same store next year to buy a new touch while his touch isn’t even getting manufactured anymore!

So, the gadgets peeking out of the stores ask – ‘do you want to touch me?’
Well, whose fingers are they anyways!

Thy Name is...!

Thy name is beauty, serenity
Thy love speaks longevity
Origin of life, creation of world
Thou own it all, remain unheard!

Tears or smiles, thou touch with both
Pain or gain I ask, you don’t
Five senses I know, you know more
I’ve less to give, you’ve more

I know your power, I know you’re stronger
Ain’t let you take on the decider
Thou touch my feet I order, I’m the master
You do so, I declare I’m the winner
I want more, I ill-use
Thou stay mute to my abuse
I know you won’t retract
They laugh if you react
You remain like you’ve been
A flowing Ganges dissolving sin

Justice, I measure coz I’m smart
Brains win over sensitive heart
You shut up and listen while I speak
If you strike back, I’ve none to seek

You bear me, bear my deed
You know things, got me all I need
I’ve gotten enough, you still give
How do I give back before I leave?

5 years with Blogger!!!

Wow! It's well been exactly 5yrs since I opened my account and created this blog of mine and named it crash kid! Why crash kid? Out of all the numerous nicknames my friends n foes used on me, this one was fairly recent that came from a colleague of mine and his reasoning was that I would crash a lot of things!

From just 3 postings in 2006 to none in 2007, crash-kid has grown with many posts (155 so far) in the following years competing with the previous year. Though there were much more in the mind's factory fighting to make it here, all didn't and the reason was quality against quantity which of course didn't strike very well and few posts could've been done away with.

But crash-kid has prided with it's fictions amongst the various other areas. That probably would remain.
There is lot more to come up and the ambitions still remain unfulfilled in all these 5yrs - sketches, paintings, nature photography and short films (with the digicam ofcourse) though nature photos made it here n there. And stuffs that were never planned for - my songs

There's not been a moment when the mind didn't think of overwhelming crash-kid with something new and something creative. Writing is such a pleasure and I wonder why wasn't this a habit of mine much before these 5years though the mind never remained quite, unimaginative or thoughtless!

Again, in the coming years crash-kid is going to grow, produce surprises and would not just stay alive or survive but thrive for excellence! Amen...

I'm here...!

Oh dear, look no further
coz I'm not far, but near
and I'm right here...

A little secret you can't hide is me
I bet you can't forget me
Why do you ponder when I talk
It's only your heartbeat that spoke
If you can, just listen
coz it's not far, it's near
and I'm right here...

Your thoughts are filled with nothing but me
Your questions n answers end at me
In your dreams I live on
In your eyes I shine
Wherever you see, you see me
coz I'm not far, but near
and I'm right here...

PS: I don't know why I did this by writing Jaanam Dekhlo in my words.
But off late I'm doing everything, coz I'm here :)

Don

Here's the title track of Don on my keyboard, again well over 2yr old.
Since its a near 3min tune that I've played at a stretch, it took many retakes and I still ended messing up a bit towards the end that I would want correct in the next version!

Don

Guzaarish

Here's Guzaarish, a song from Ghajni I had tried on my keyboard some time ago. I hope to play the full song sometime and with much better sense of music :)

Guzaarish

Jaanam Dekhlo

Here's my 2nd most favorite song, again by Udit Narayan. Probably he's my most favorite singer (I don't know that for sure) Composed in some 1940s by legendary Madan Mohan and was reused/rerecorded by his son for Veer Zaara and who better than Udit can do justice!
I attempt again just for the love of it and nothing else. And I do promise that better versions will be replaced as I reiterate man becomes perfect only with practice...
